Announcing the Arrival in Style….

Film          :  1984

Client        :  Apple Macintosh

Country     :  USA

Released  :  1984

Agency     :  Chiat/Day, Venice

Director     :  Ridley Scott

When something as stylish like Apple Macintosh personal computer is introduced to the market, you need to announce that in style. And thats what Apple has done in 1984 when they were about to launch the Apple Macintosh personal computers that changed the world entirely.

A commercial of US $ 900,000 was unheard of in those days. But I guess people in Apple knew about the potential of their product and they didn’t want the launch commercial to be like any other. The result was this commercial. Regarded as one of the best master pieces of all time, this commercial drew its inspiration from the George orwell Novel, 1984. Entirely set on a different world, the film announces the arrival of the stylish and innovative apple macintosh personal computers through the arrival of a beautiful lady.

Directed by Ridley Scott, this went on to become the most memorable ads ever telecasted in US. This commercial was unlike any other commercial of those times and did made people talk about it. Critically acclaimed, it did create a lot furore in the Apple itself. There were lot of people inside who disliked the ad. But Steve Jobs was pretty sure about this commercial and went ahead with it! His visions were always ahead of time and that made us witness such an amazing and unusual commercial!

Puppy and the Phone: An age old combination!

Film : SPOT – Call Diverting

Client : Telecom

Agency : Saatchi & Saatchi NZ

Country : NewZealand

Released : 1991

Look at this commercial.. Mind blowing is the word!! Linking telecom services to dog is not at all a new idea as it is celebrated here in India.. It dates back from early 1990’s when Telecom NewZealand came out with Spot ads. The introduction of various concepts like Ca;ll diverting, call waiting, Fax etc were made popular through this well directed communication.

Hats off to the director!! What an original idea. It requires some master minds to create such a lovely campaign

In the 90s SPOT was an acronym for the Services and Products of Telecom – and Spot was a much loved Australian Jack Russell terrier. He starred in 43 different Telecom commercials made between 1991 and 1998 — many of them on an epic scale and seemingly at risk to his life or limb.

This was one of the first films for Telecom. The rest will follow.. Watch out this space for more!
